Overview
Monknot is a native macOS application for working with Markdown, text files, PDFs, folders, and terminal sessions.
Monknot is designed to work locally with files stored on your Mac. It does not require an account and does not use advertising or cross-app tracking.
Files and Documents
Monknot accesses only the files and folders you choose to open.
Your Markdown files, text files, source files, PDFs, annotations, and exported documents remain on your Mac. Monknot does not upload their contents to Monknot servers.
You are responsible for the storage, backup, and synchronization services you choose to use for these files, such as iCloud Drive or another folder-syncing service.
Local Application Data
Monknot may store information locally on your Mac to provide its features, including:
- Application preferences
- Theme and appearance settings
- Recently opened files or folders
- Window and workspace state
- File-access permissions
- Security-scoped bookmarks
- PDF annotations
- Daily note and workspace settings
This information is stored locally and is not used for advertising or user profiling.
You can remove Monknot’s locally stored data by uninstalling the application and deleting its related application data from macOS.
Terminal Sessions
Terminal sessions run locally on your Mac.
Monknot does not receive or store your terminal commands, terminal output, shell history, environment variables, or credentials.
Commands and tools you run inside a terminal session may connect to external services. Those connections are controlled by the commands and third-party tools you choose to use and are subject to their own privacy policies.
Network Connections
Monknot does not require an account or cloud service to open and edit your local files.
The application may make network connections when you open external links or use commands and third-party tools through its terminal. Monknot does not control how those external services process information.
Software Updates
Monknot uses Sparkle to check for application updates. The stable update feed at monknot.app redirects to an appcast hosted with Monknot’s latest GitHub Release. Update downloads are also hosted by GitHub Releases.
Sparkle asks before enabling automatic update checks. Monknot does not enable Sparkle system profiling, analytics, or activity reporting. Update requests do not include document contents, terminal contents, or workspace data.
Analytics and Crash Reporting
Monknot does not use advertising SDKs, tracking SDKs, or cross-app tracking.
Monknot does not collect usage analytics or automatically send document contents, terminal contents, or activity history.
Support Communications
When you contact support, you voluntarily provide information such as your email address, device details, screenshots, error messages, or other information included in your message.
This information is used only to respond to your request, investigate the reported issue, and improve Monknot. Do not include passwords, private keys, access tokens, or other sensitive information in support messages.
Data Sharing
Monknot does not sell, rent, or trade personal information.
Information sent through a support request may be processed by the email services used to receive and respond to your message.
Data Retention
Local application data remains on your Mac until you remove it.
Support communications may be retained for as long as reasonably necessary to respond to your request, maintain support records, resolve recurring issues, and meet legal obligations.
You may request the deletion of information submitted through a support email by contacting support@monknot.app.
Children’s Privacy
Monknot is not directed specifically at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
This policy may be updated when Monknot’s features or data practices change. The latest version will be published on this page with an updated revision date.
